Winter Update!

It’s been a while since I last updated, so let’s cover the two big updates.

The first big update was that Precinct 17 was released for Half-Life 2: Episode Two.  You can download it here.  This is a mod that features a level, title screen, custom voice acting and choreography, and much more.

The second big update involves a trio of maps for Doom SnapMap!  One of which, Caviar, has the honor of being the Featured Map right there on the front page, which at the time of this writing has over 4,000 plays!

Caviar (NZKXJBL4)
In Caviar, you must stop a delusional UAC executive who set his sights on Demonic transformation.

Third Rail (HERFXQDL)
With the help of VEGA, the Doom Marine must restore power to an outbound tram.

Nautilus (VDAF5WMH)
Trapped in Hell, the Doom Slayer must find a teleporter to escape the spiraling Nautilus.

New Map: MAMH

MAMH is a new map for Half-Life 2: Episode Two.  It came in 2nd Place out of 15 entries for RunThinkShootLive’s LiberationVille competition!  What does MAMH mean?  Download and play the map to find out the surprising answer!

As with High Wire, this map was entered in The Hammer Cup 2016 competition, a 5-part mapping series with prizes such as a NECA Gravity Gun.

New Map: High Wire

High Wire is a new map for Half-Life 2: Episode Two.  It won RunThinkShootLive’s ChasmVille contest and was built in just one week!  Go and give it a play today!

ChasmVille was the first of five mapping competitions in The Hammer Cup 2016.  The cup features prizes, including a NECA Gravity Gun.  As with my previous entries, the VMF comes with the map pack so you can see how things were built.

New Map: Truss

Truss is a new map for Half-Life 2: Episode Two, entered in the VerticalVilleTwo level contest.  In this contest, mappers had 18 days to build a map that made use of vertical gameplay.  Truss is centered on something we have a lot of here in Portland – bridges!

And yes, it is a functional drawbridge, complete with counterweights!  Custom models were also used for the bridge structure itself.

New Release: Cascade Aqueduct for Descent 2

What’s that?  Descent 2?  You mean that game from way back in the late 90s with 360º 3D gameplay?  Yep.

I felt like making a new level for it, so I found SDLDevil, which is a Windows port of the ancient MSDOS editor for the game, and built Cascade Aqueduct.  It’s a medium-sized single player map with a water theme that uses Descent 1 robots exclusively.

It’s time to fire up your 28.8 modem and download all 66KB of this fresh Descenty goodness.  Have fun!

New Map: Camp 43

Hey, everyone!  I released a new map for Half-Life 2: Episode Two as part of Run Think Shoot LIve’s Station60Ville competition.  The goal of this contest was to create a resistance outpost.

In my entry, Camp 43, you volunteer to investigate a distress call emanating from the eponymous base, which has broadcast on a never-ending loop to all rebel stations around White Forest.  What will you find there?

New Release: Bravado for Black Mesa (Retail)

Bravado is a new map for the retail version of Black Mesa and is now available in the game’s Steam Workshop!

While attempting to escape Black Mesa, Freeman’s tram is halted by a military lockdown at an administrative facility chiselled into the side of a canyon wall.  Freeman must restore power to the tram and, along the way, discover what happened to the scientists and guards that worked there.

This package includes a single map and the source .vmf file (inside the .vpk).  If you like it, make sure to rate, fav and comment on it!

New Release: Avenue Odessa

Avenue Odessa is a new mod for Half-Life 2: Episode Two!

Avenue Odessa 1

Based on an earlier entry for Run Think Shoot LIve’s CityStreetsVille competition, Avenue Odessa was released as a full mod with a number of improvements based on feedback and a special additional level which takes place on a speeding train!  Check it out!

Avenue Odessa 2

This mod casts you as the newest recruit in the army of the illustrious Colonel Odessa Cubbage, who eagle-eyed HL2 fans may remember from the Highway 17 chapter in which you fought off a Gunship while the Colonel cowered in a basement.  Your goal is to help the Colonel escape City 17 before the Citadel goes boom!

Although the first level of this mod was originally built for a 3-week contest, it was a pretty ambitious undertaking because it included a fully-voiced and choreographed Cubbage.  The full mod features over 80 lines of voice acted dialog, several choreographed Faceposer scenes as well as closed captions and some subtle custom particle effects.  There are also a handful of small, Easter egg reactions from the Colonel.

Freeman Award

Forest Train is a joint winner of PlanetPhillip’s “Freeman Award” for 2014, which asked visitors to rate their favorite Half-Life 2 single player mods for the year.  It shares this honor with The Masked Prisoner, another great mod you should check out.

I continue to find entertaining playthroughs of Forest Train on YouTube.  This one from Russian gamer RobosergTV stood out to me.  It’s funny how the reaction to a speeding train barreling down the tracks is the same in every language!

I’ve probably said this before, but watching video playthroughs of something you’ve built is one of the most rewarding experiences, especially when they come from halfway around the world.
