Here’s a curiosity for anyone interested – this is a map of Forest Train, made on December 16th, 2013. Since this map was a personal project, I made some general notes and sketches about it because most of it was in my head. Still, when I had finished this, I knew right away that the flow intrigued me and encouraged me to keep working on it.
Maxtasy has now offered a video of my entry for PlanetPhillip’s Endville competition, Excavation. This is the first video review I’ve seen for this level, so thanks to Maxtasy for making it!
Excavation was made back in July of last year over the course of just 24 days, the length of the competition. The objective of the competition was to create an “ending” level that started with a bang and brought closure to the work in BeginningVille and MiddleVille. As I did not participate in those contests, the premise of Excavation was that after much fighting, Freeman and a Vortigaunt finally located a Combine device that was jamming communications from White Forest. The Vortigaunt sabotages the machine while Freeman makes his way to the surface.
On a technical level, this was a level where I learned to use ai_goal_standoff with info_node_hints for cover, both of which were later used extensively in Forest Train. You can download this level here.
My latest release for Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Forest Train, is now available at PlanetPhillip.com! You can download it and view screenshots here! Have fun!
There has been a bit of a delay in getting the mod posted to PlanetPhillip. I’ve taken the opportunity to fix some lingering issues, mostly minor tweaks and fixes for speculative issues, after the initial build was done. The new version is ready to go, so hopefully it won’t be too much longer before you’ll be able to enjoy the mod!
